Each year, Arbor Day affords a different school the opportunity to be chosen to participate in the planting of new trees in their community.

BMS STEM students learned about the use of green spaces to create community and improve wellness. They also explored different park design options for interacting with the space, including how to make the area welcoming to other students, and they created a plan for how the green space would look.

The Arbor Day event took place on Thu., Oct. 12, 2023 at 701 Tully Street, Syracuse, New York, at 9:30 a.m. with students planting 16 trees to launch the green-space transformation.

At 10:15 a.m., two memorial trees were planted in honor of Brexialee Torres Ortiz and Aisha Haskins-Stephens with remarks following from community leaders including: Mayor Ben Walsh; City Arborist, Stephen Harris; and Department of Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner Michael Collins.

Dr. Harry Valentin, Principal, Syracuse STEM at Blodgett Middle School, students from BMS and community partners were also in attendance.
