Fine's wife mulls libel suit vs. ESPN

(AP) -- The wife of fired Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine claimed Wednesday that ESPN maliciously trampled her reputation by broadcasting salacious stories about her and about claims that her husband molested ball boys.

Laurie Fine held a news conference Wednesday and threatened to file a libel lawsuit in federal court against the cable network and two employees. ESPN in November broke the story of two former Syracuse ball boys, Robert Davis and Michael Lang, who claimed they were molested by Bernie Fine decades ago.

"I'm here today as a wife and a mother who has had to endure the trauma of being smeared in the public as a monster," she said, reading quickly from a statement. "My life has been destroyed."

Inmate Death Not Forgotten

Earlier in the week, more than 60 protesters gathered in front of the Onondaga County Justice Center to demand Onondaga County officers are charged for killing inmate Raul Pinet Jr. and Chuniece Patterson in 2010.

A state report concluded the restraining techniques applied by the deputies during the arrest could have contributed to Pinet’s death.

The state Commission of Correction report, released April 24, concluded Pinet died after deputies kneeled on his back and neck and improperly placed a mask to block his spitting. The report stated Pinet died of “asphyxia during restraint.” The commission rejected the county medical examiner’s ruling that Pinet’s death was caused by Pinet being in a state of “excited delirium” caused by cocaine use.

Republicans Upset with Mahoney

Mahoney supports goes beyond a public endorsement. She has partnered with democratic state Sen. David Valesky to co-host a $1000-per-person fundraising reception for Cuffy at the Bellevue Country Club.
